Irene Schultz (NÈE BECKER)
Irene Becker Schultz was the second child in the Becker family of five children. She was born and raised in Blue Island, IL.
As a young woman, she was enamored by Leroy Schultz who rode a big motorcycle and was exciting for her. She eloped with Leroy to Crown Point, IN, where at that time many young couples would run off to and get married on the spur of the moment. She married Leroy right out of high school and was probably about 18 or 19 years old. Irene and Leroy would have three children, Dennis, Diane and James. They lived a few different places, but one of them was on a small farm in Alsip, Illinois. My family would visit there and we kids would run through the corn stalks that were much taller than we were. It was fun to hide in the rows of corn while playing hide and seek. They also had lots of chickens that would come after you if they had a mind. There was a wonderful collie named Queenie that we loved to pet too. Irene loved to shop and travel. She took lots of short road trips to the beach with her kids. She loved to see different things. She worked at a small restaurant called Jolly Jays in Palos Heights for many years. She also worked at Blue M in Blue Island until she retired from there. Unfortunately Irene had Alzheimer’s from the age of 62 and died at the age of 66. I remember her as a very kind and sweet aunt. She always had a smile for you and was interested in what you had to say. My father Charles Becker and Irene were always especially close growing up. My dad always had a soft spot for his sister. Her children have said she was an absolutely wonderful mother with a lot of heart.
